Bill, who do you think sits when Simmonds comes back?

Normally the obvious choice would be Sestito, but with his 2 goals and B. Schenn struggling, might Schenn be the one to have a couple of games off?

Great write up.

Beautiful job of breaking down a trade discussion. I have no doubts that the Daley scenario happens all the time.

"Why doesn't Holmgren get a deal done already??" Well, it's not that easy.

Solid workmanlike win against a good team. Bryzgalov continues to play lights out. He has settled in beautifully so far in his second season.

The offense from Sestito was a pleasant surprise.

Special team play is improving as well. Could sure use Hartnell and Simmonds back, 2 goals or less in 8 out of 10 games is somewhat concerning.

Rinaldo is a tough SOB. Clement said the other day he's never been cut during a hockey game. That amazes me if true.

Luke Schenn has played very well in 8 of the 10 games so far for the Flyers. If the Flyers had a healthy Simmonds, and Hartnell right now it wouldn't be an issue. They are lacking a power forward that can finish around the net at the moment.

Why not McGinn?

Bill - thanks for the good article. Although not your intent, it is helpful to put a perverbial blanket over the nonsensical trade talk on these threads.

If this was 2000 years ago, many on this board would debate whether we would trade a 2nd vs. a 3rd round pick for J.C.

99% of the users would also not include Coots in any deal, even if we got J.C. + a couple of close friends.

Thanks again for the player by player analysis - very interesting.

Bill I think your breakdown of trade talks should be copied and pasted into every blog.

If there was defensive help, or a scoring winger, out there for a price Holmgren was willing to pay, they'd have that player on the roster. As the season goes on, assuming the Flyers continue to improve and move up in the playoff race, I think we might end up seeing a McGillis for Ragnarsson type deal, or a deal that sees a lesser pick moved for a veteran who has fallen out of favor with his current team(Ryan Whitney in Edmonton, Roman Hamrlik in Washignton).

The Flyers played a very entertaining game last night. Some breakdowns, but good effort and they did a great job of keeping pressure on the Lightning and stymying the Bolts break out.

Miss The Mole, but at this juncture, they need L. Schenn more than JVR.

In reponse to the comments regarding Rinaldo hitting Crombeen when he was on his way down.....I personally would have liked to see him pull up on Crombeen but I do think Rinaldo is sort of a crazy fighter and just launches punches like a wild man. I'm not even sure he is aware

Let's hope a) there are no injuries in the next game or two, so there WILL be a numbers game to sort out, and b) the team wins and it comes to an enviably tough call where Sestito makes himself hard to remove from the lineup.

Personally, I'm not scratching the more versatile B. Schenn just to keep Sestito in the lineup based on one game. Schenn has scuffled but just a few weeks ago, he was being used on the first line. Only way to break loose is to play his way through it.

Rinaldo is like a shark during a feeding frenzy. He just starts throwing haymakers and doesn't stop. He can't be 169 pounds like they list him can he? Crombeen is 210 and got knocked into next week.

Really impressed by the Flyers win last night, especially against a high powered team like Tampa Bay. Giroux has been buzzing the last 2 games and I expect points to start pouring in from him over the next few games. McGinn looks great too.

By the way Bill, thanks for that little piece about trading at the end there. I think we all (myself included) need a reality check like that every once and a while.

His offense would be helpful, but they are getting good play from Luke Schenn at a position of great need. When Simmonds and Hartnell return, the absence of JvR will be less felt.

So far, I think both teams are happy with the trade.

Zac Rinaldo, from Flyers quote sheet: "I hit him until he was down I'm not going to hit nobody no matter who they are or what they done."

Jesse Spector ‏@jessespector
"Q: Would you say there's an element of that you would've taken back?" Rinaldo: "No, not at all. I don't regret nothing, no."

Jesse Spector ‏@jessespector
One more Rinaldo gem: "It's a fight man it's hockey. ... You ever been to a fight? It's crazy you don't know what you're thinking."

Ooh, one more. Bryzgalov was asked how he went into the game mentally. Response: "I can't tell you because you wouldn't believe me."

We'd be in a much worse position with JVR in the lineup over L. Schenn. Of course, Mesz may not get injury had L. Schenn never been acquired per the butterfly effect but another top 6 defender would still be more important to this team, IMO.

If there was no L Schenn, Lilja would be in the lineup. That is a frightening thought. I have seen enough of him. Teams are starved for defensemen, yet somehow Lilja slipped through waivers. Tells you everything you need to know.

Perhaps it is. But I'd rather see something that stirs conversation about hockey than the inanity of somebody trying to have the last post in a thread.

Schenn has played very well (aside from a few bonehead plays) for the Flyers' and I shudder to think what this defense would look like with Lilja in there over Schenn. I wish JVR continued success in Toronto though. I hope he turns into the 30 goal guy he has the potential to be. Nothing but love for Reemer.
